The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension holds Minnesota's central criminal history data. Every law enforcement agency in the state, including the Eden Prairie Police Department, sends arrest and conviction records to the BCA. Anyone can search the public side of this database at no cost through chs.state.mn.us. No login or registration is needed.

BCA records include felony convictions, gross misdemeanor convictions, and many pending charges. Under Minnesota Statute 13.87, conviction data is public for 15 years after the sentence ends. Arrest records, including those that did not result in a conviction, are public under Statute 13.82. Traffic citations and petty misdemeanor violations are generally not included in the BCA public database.

Online searches return results quickly. If you find a case and want more detail, the next step is to look it up in MCRO or contact Hennepin County District Court directly. For a certified document, the BCA accepts mail requests at a separate cost, which is covered in the mail request section below.

BCA Criminal History Search portal for Eden Prairie and Hennepin County background checks

The BCA public portal is the primary tool for free statewide criminal history searches, covering Eden Prairie and all Hennepin County cases.

Eden Prairie Police Department

The Eden Prairie Police Department covers the city and handles local incident records. If you need a copy of a police report or other public data from a local incident, you contact the department directly.

Address8080 Mitchell Road, Eden Prairie, MN 55344
Phone952-949-6200

Public data requests can be submitted in writing or in person. The department may charge a fee that covers the cost of reproduction but cannot exceed it. Data related to active investigations, juveniles, and certain victim information is protected from public release. If any part of your request is denied, the department must provide a written explanation citing the specific statute that authorizes the denial.

Most routine records requests are processed within a few business days. Larger or older requests may take more time. Under Minnesota's Data Practices Act, you do not need to explain why you want public records. The department cannot require you to state a reason as a condition of access.

Hennepin County District Court

Eden Prairie is served by the Fourth Judicial District, which covers all of Hennepin County. The district court is located in downtown Minneapolis. All criminal, civil, family, and probate cases from Eden Prairie are filed here.

Address300 S 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487

The clerk's office can provide certified copies of court documents. Fees vary by document type. Non-certified copies of public filings are generally available at the counter without needing to provide a reason. MCRO and MPA Remote offer remote access to case records without traveling to Minneapolis.

MCRO at mncourts.gov/access-case-records/mcro covers court cases from all Minnesota counties. It's free to use. You can search by person name or case number. Results show case status, parties, charges, court dates, and dispositions. The system includes Eden Prairie cases along with all other Hennepin County matters.

MCRO is a case index system. It gives you case-level information rather than access to the documents themselves. If you find a case in MCRO and want the actual complaint or order, you can follow up with MPA Remote or request a copy from the clerk's office. For most searches, MCRO provides enough detail to answer the question at hand without needing to dig into individual filings.

MCRO portal showing Hennepin County court records for Eden Prairie background checks

MCRO covers all Hennepin County cases including Eden Prairie, and is free to search by name or case number.

Minnesota Public Access Remote (MPA Remote)

MPA Remote is available at pa.courts.state.mn.us. It allows users to view court document images from filings in Minnesota courts, including cases from Hennepin County. This goes beyond what MCRO provides. Where MCRO gives you case-level data, MPA Remote lets you actually read the documents.

Subscriptions are available for frequent users, but one-time access is also possible. If you found a case in MCRO and need to see the charges, sentencing details, or court orders in full, MPA Remote is the tool for that. Cost is modest for occasional use. Not every document in every case is available, but coverage is broad for criminal and civil matters from the Fourth Judicial District.

DOC Offender Locator

The Minnesota Department of Corrections Offender Locator at coms.doc.state.mn.us/PublicViewer lets you search by name for people currently in state custody or on supervised release. It's free and shows facility name, custody status, and supervised release details.

The DOC locator only shows current status. People who completed their DOC sentence and are no longer supervised do not appear. For past incarceration data, the BCA portal and court records give better coverage. The DOC locator is useful as a quick check on whether someone is currently in the state correctional system. It does not replace a full criminal history search.

Minnesota's predatory offender registry, maintained under Statute 243.166, is a separate public database. It covers registered predatory offenders who may be living in the community rather than in a correctional facility. The registry is searchable through the BCA and DPS websites at no cost.

Minnesota Data Practices Act

The Data Practices Act defines what government records are public and sets rules for how agencies must respond to requests. Criminal convictions are public under Statute 13.87 and arrests are public under Statute 13.82. These rules apply to the Eden Prairie Police Department, Hennepin County courts, and every other government body in Minnesota.

Agencies must respond to data requests promptly. Any denial must be in writing and must cite the specific law that authorizes withholding the data. Requesters can challenge improper denials through the Department of Administration's Information Policy Analysis Division. They can also file in district court if the administrative process does not resolve the issue.

Expungement under Statute 609A allows certain records to be sealed. An expungement order removes a record from public access through BCA and court portals. Law enforcement may still access sealed records internally, but you cannot find them through public search tools after expungement. Not every offense qualifies for expungement, and the process requires a court petition. Results of expungement hearings vary depending on the offense and the individual's record.

Requesting Records by Mail

Certified criminal history records from the BCA are available by mail. This is the right choice when you need an official document rather than a basic online search result.

Mailing Address1430 Maryland Avenue E, St. Paul, MN 55106
Phone651-793-2400
Fee$15 per request
Processing TimeApproximately 2 weeks

Include the subject's full name and date of birth. Enclose a check or money order for $15 payable to the State of Minnesota. The BCA does not process mail requests on a rush basis. If you need fast results, the online portal at chs.state.mn.us provides free instant name-based searches. Fingerprint-based searches under Statute 299C.10 give more thorough results but require fingerprinting at an authorized site and cost more than name-based requests.
