Blue Earth County Background Check
A Blue Earth County background check covers criminal history, court records, and other public data from county and state sources. The county seat is Mankato, home to the District Court and Sheriff's Office. Free online tools from the BCA and the Minnesota court system give you access to most public records without leaving home. This page covers each source and how to use it effectively for searching Blue Earth County records.
Blue Earth County Overview
BCA Criminal History Search
The BCA Criminal History Search is the first tool to use for a Blue Earth County background check. Run by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, it's free and open to the public. Enter a full name and date of birth to pull conviction data from courts across Minnesota. Results cover 15 years of conviction history from the date the sentence was discharged. Only Minnesota records appear.
The BCA shows convictions, not arrests. Minnesota Statute 13.87 sets the rule: conviction records are public for 15 years after discharge. Arrest data without a conviction is not on the public system. This means a blank BCA result could reflect no convictions rather than no contact with law enforcement. For a more complete record, pair the BCA search with a search through MCRO.
Mail requests to the BCA cost $15. Include a notarized consent form and send to 1430 Maryland Avenue E, St. Paul, MN 55106. Processing is about two weeks. The BCA answers questions at 651-793-2400.

Walk-in visitors can search by name or case number at the clerk's counter. Certified copies carry a fee. Bring photo ID. For documents from before July 2015, some records may be in paper form, and retrieval can take time. Call the clerk at 507-304-4650 before visiting if you're looking for older records.
The MCRO system is a good alternative for records filed after 2015. It lets you read actual court documents without going to the courthouse. For older docket data, use MPA Remote. Between these two online tools and the in-person option at the Mankato courthouse, Blue Earth County records are fairly accessible.

The Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office is also on Carver Road in Mankato, sharing the government complex with the courts. The sheriff provides law enforcement for the full county. Arrest records held by the sheriff are public under Minnesota Statute 13.82. That law makes public the time and place of an arrest, the charges filed, the arresting officer, and final case disposition.

Under Minnesota Statute 299C.10, the sheriff fingerprints people arrested for felonies, gross misdemeanors, and certain misdemeanors. Those prints go to the BCA for inclusion in the statewide criminal history database. This is how local Blue Earth County arrests flow up to the state system. Anyone convicted after an arrest in this county should appear in the BCA database within the 15-year window.
Minnesota Court Records Online (MCRO)
The Minnesota Court Records Online portal provides free public access to court documents across all Minnesota counties, including Blue Earth. Four search tabs let you look by party name, case number, attorney name, or judge name. Documents from July 2015 forward are available to view and download. This is the fastest free tool for getting actual court filings without visiting the courthouse.
When you search by name, filter by Blue Earth County to narrow results to this county. Criminal complaints, plea agreements, and sentencing records are often available for newer cases. Civil and probate records appear in MCRO as well. For older cases, the MPA Remote system shows docket entries without attached documents, covering a longer date range.
DOC Offender Locator and Other State Tools
The Minnesota DOC Offender Locator shows current Department of Corrections supervision status. Search by name, date of birth, or offender ID. Results include incarceration, supervised release, and DOC-managed probation. Blue Earth County residents under state supervision appear here. County jail status isn't covered. Contact the sheriff's office for county jail inquiries.
The DPS background check page explains the full picture of how Minnesota's criminal history system works. It covers what data is included, how to request records, and what different results mean. Worth reading if you're new to the process.
The Minnesota Court Directory lists all county courts with contact info and hours. Blue Earth County is in the Fifth District. If you need to search neighboring counties, the directory makes it easy to find the right contact.
Minnesota Law and Access to Criminal Records
The Data Practices Act at Minnesota Statute Chapter 13 governs public access to government records. All government data is presumed public. Agencies can't restrict access without pointing to a specific law. This applies to Blue Earth County records the same as everywhere else in Minnesota.
For criminal records: conviction data is public for 15 years from discharge (Statute 13.87). Arrest records without conviction are not public through the BCA, though some information is public under Statute 13.82. Juvenile records are closed. Expunged records under Statute 609A are sealed. Predatory offender registration under Statute 243.166 runs for 10 years or more, with non-compliant offenders listed publicly. Minnesota has over 18,000 registered predatory offenders statewide, but only non-compliant registrants appear in the public database.
DHS background studies under Statute 245C apply separately to people in licensed settings. They follow a different process and different disqualification rules from the standard public criminal history search through the BCA.
