Douglas County Overview
BCA Criminal Background Check
The BCA Criminal History Search is the most direct route for a Douglas County background check. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension runs this free public database. You search by name and date of birth. The system returns conviction records from Minnesota courts, including cases filed in Douglas County. Local law enforcement and the county court both report to the BCA, keeping records current.
What the database shows is set by law. Under Minnesota Statute 13.87, conviction records are public for 15 years following discharge of the sentence. After that period, the record is no longer shown publicly. Arrests that did not lead to a conviction are excluded entirely from public view. This is a statewide rule and applies to every Douglas County case in the system.
Run a free search at chs.state.mn.us. Results are statewide, so you can find Douglas County cases alongside any other Minnesota records in a single search.
The BCA Criminal History Search provides free statewide access to conviction records, including those from Douglas County courts in Alexandria.
To get a certified background check document, mail a notarized form and a $15 fee to the BCA at 1430 Maryland Ave E, St. Paul, MN 55106. Processing takes around two weeks. Call 651-793-2400 for help. This produces an official signed document from the same BCA database as the free online search.
Note: The BCA mail check and online search cover the same data. The mail process adds the cost and notarized form in exchange for an official signed result.
Douglas County District Court Records

The Court Administrator handles all case files, records requests, and copy services. Douglas County residents and anyone with a case connection to the county can access records through the Court Administrator's office or through the state's free online systems.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is at 216 7th Avenue W, Alexandria, MN 56308. Phone: 320-762-8151. The Sheriff handles county law enforcement, arrests, and jail operations. Under Minn. Stat. 299C.10, the Sheriff must fingerprint everyone arrested for a felony, gross misdemeanor, or targeted misdemeanor. Those fingerprints go to the BCA and become part of the statewide criminal history record used in background checks.
Arrest data carries limited public access. Under Minn. Stat. 13.82, the time, place, charges, and final outcome of an arrest are public. Investigative details and other arrest file materials may be restricted. Contact the Sheriff's Office directly with a specific request and cite the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act as the basis.
Other Record Search Tools
The Minnesota DOC Offender Locator gives current incarceration and supervised release status for people in the state corrections system. It is free at coms.doc.state.mn.us/PublicViewer. This tool does not show completed sentences. Combine it with the BCA and MCRO tools for a more complete Douglas County background check.
The BCA homepage covers the full range of services the bureau offers for background checks, criminal history, and related public safety functions in Minnesota.
Expungement affects what searches can return. Under Minn. Stat. 609A, a court can seal a criminal record. Sealed records are removed from public-facing databases like the BCA and MCRO. A clean search result does not always mean no criminal history. It may mean any records present have been sealed through the expungement process. Law enforcement and some licensing agencies keep access to sealed records after expungement.
The DPS BCA page at dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/Pages/background-checks.aspx explains the full range of background check options available to Minnesota residents and organizations. All of those options apply to Douglas County records just as they do statewide.
